Back in May, my sister (Kim) and her dude (John) drove down from Rochester to go to
Letchworth state park. Since it's about 20 minutes from my apartment, they invited me along.
The plan was to do some hiking, grill some stuff for lunch, and generally celebrate the
awesomely amazing weather that we had been blessed with.
Letchworth is known as the Grand Canyon of the East. It consists of a gorge cut by the Genessee river (which flows south to north, by the way), containing 3 or so decently large waterfalls, along with the surrounding wooded area, picnic groves, playgrounds, campgrounds and hiking trails. It's actually quite a nice park, but 90% of the people who visit only drive down the main road, look at the falls, then drive out.
Which is great for people like us, because it means that once you get off the main drag, you have almost the entire park to yourself...especially when you go on a random Wednesday afternoon approximately two months before the main tourist season.
The first thing we did after arriving was cook hot dogs, because we were starving. Since that's not very exciting, and I didn't take any pictures of it, I'll skip over that part.
We saw a frog (and took a picture).
And we saw a snake (and took a picture).
But by far, the most exciting part of the trip happened after I saw the bridge.

More specifically, the most exciting part came after I saw what happened when you throw a big rock off of said bridge. |

You knew they were coming...and here they are.
A big rock. (876 Kb mov file)
Kim took the video and turned the camera sideways to get a better perspective. Unfortunately I don't have the
capability to rotate a video clip, so you're just going to have to deal with it. Fortunately it doesn't look too
weird, for some reason. At the end, John laughs, I laugh, and John says 'it's great that that broke', because
the rock split in half on impact. (you can't see it in the clip)
An even bigger rock. (1.1 Mb mov file)
This monster took two people to carry and throw. The clip doesn't do the actual impact justice.
After we dropped rocks of all sizes for a while, we kept walking, until we found the end of the trail with some intriguing signs.
We went down to see the falls a little closer.
It was pretty cool.
Then we got bored and started chucking things in the river and watching them float over the falls. Watch it for Yourself (984 Kb .mov file)
