I chose the secret room partly for the name, partly because we don't use it for anything except a little storage, and primarily because it's quiet. Since it's up away from the rest of the house, it doesn't have any house noises, like the heating system, refrigerator, ticking clocks, footsteps, etc. Since it was already mostly quiet, I decided to bring it the rest of the way.

I searched the house for old blankets, sheets, rugs and other scraps of cloth. I went to the thrift store and bought an old sleeping bag and two more old blankets. Armed with my trusty staple gun (a PowerShot) I proceeded to cover everything but the floor with cloth.

I hung one of the blankets from a shower curtain rod that I found in the basement. You can draw it closed to isolate that half of the room from the other half. The cloth is there absorb sound. It makes it quieter by blocking out some of the outside noise, but its primary purpose is to dampen inside noise. This means that inside the cloth-lined room, (known from here on as the dead room) there is no echo. Any sound that you make gets absorbed by the fabric, so the microphones have a clean, echo free sound to record.

Now that we've got the space, lets get set up. Next
